Taking That First Step into Construction

Some say the best way to learn is on the job. Well, at Oakmont Construction we really believe that experience is the best way to develop the necessary skills needed to get the job done.

Quantity Surveyor, Lawrie Wiggins, first began working with the team at Oakmont Construction part-time whilst in his third year of study at Anglia Ruskin University. To complete his degree, Lawrie was required to gain work experience whilst studying.

Lawrie was based at our large-scale data centre project in Dagenham 4 days a week where he spent a lot of his time developing and learning new skills necessary for his degree. His experiences on site included being shown around, taught how different components work, experiencing different trades, and learning through hands on experience, how construction projects work and go together.

Lawrie was guided by his colleagues; on site and office based, and through his university modules, and he discovered his strengths within the job.

Lawrie explained the experience of working within a company during his studies helped him to manage his time effectively and made his degree feel less intense to him because he was able to get out of the classroom and get stuck into some real-life projects.

So, do you fancy gaining some valuable experience yourself?

Oakmont want to encourage young people to look into the possibility of gaining experience within the construction sector.

It’s no secret that the construction industry faces a skills shortage.  Oakmont want to help change the outdated perception some might have of the industry and encourage young people to work within the sector. After all, there’s nothing quite like that feeling of pride and positive impact after the completion of a project!

When asked is he would recommend to others to gain experience within the industry, Lawrie said: “100%. Especially with Oakmont. Oakmont were so supportive throughout my degree and continue to be now. Claire, Andy, Ian and Lee are all fantastic people. I can’t fault what they’ve done for me. The support was second to none and if the opportunity arises for you, then go for it!”

Lawrie gained a 2:1 BSC honours degree in Quantity Surveying and continues to work for Oakmont Construction today.
