All Parked Up at Basingstoke

Over the past two years, Oakmont have been worked on several different phases at Festival Place Shopping Centre in Basingstoke. Having completed works at St John’s Square and inside the shopping centre, the remaining phase of works concentrated mainly on Car Park 1.

Oakmont’s scope of works was to demolish the existing Car Park 1 and to rebuild, from the bridge level, a new car park that could accommodate in excess of 200 vehicles. We also undertook repairs to the remaining structure.

These works were completed over a live dual carriageway, mainly during the night, when the steel structure and other materials were craned on to the top of the car park deck. The close proximity of our works to the dual carriageway, meant specially adapted demolition machinery had to be brought in to complete the works.

The new Car Park 1 was clad with over 47,000 steel plates to form kinetic panels that move with the wind to create a ripple effect and an ever-changing and constantly moving design feature.
